If you use a cheap cross-word book bought in most pound shops, you can ask the questions to the residents and giving them the first letter of the answer and a few wee hints, its amazing how is makes them think and is a good challenge for them.

WEDDING bells boomed out at Balclutha Court care home last week as staff gave residents a day to remember.
They arranged a mock wedding as a spot of fun and got everyone involved, with managers becoming vicars and carers becoming bridesmaids for the day.
Two of the residents, Andy McLaughlin and Anna Duncan, also played their part as the blushing brides parents.
In front of guests from the home, groom for the day Stuart Hayton married his colleague, Karen Darroch, and a great time was had by all at a reception afterwards.
Karen Dillon, the activities co-ordinator at Balclutha, said: It started off as a wee bit of fun but everyone got into the spirit of it. The residents had an absolute ball.
We have to thank Homebase for giving us an arch for the ceremony, plus Keogh and Savage, Passionara and Mystique for supplying wedding outfits.

The best activity in our home (Avonpark, Strathaven) is the Music session. this is where i grab the box of instruments that we have and get the residents to make as much noise as they possibly can. At the minute i have the residents helping me write a song. they seem to enjoy this activity as they can suggest anything for the song and help with the music for it. it gets the brain going and makes for a fun & noisey afternoon

Last year Brockburn Very Sheltered contacted South West Community Transport (Tel 0141 881 9998) Margaret Urie who arrange many trips on a monthly basis. This group arrange many outings to Ayr, Saltcoats, Helensburgh, Balloch, Largs etc, each trip costs £6.00 and the mini bus comes direct to the complex. Our tenants have raved about the trips, one tenant said it has given her a new lease of life, its like having a wee holiday each week.

Our best activities in our complex is Bingo. We play bingo in our complex 3 times per week and we find it attracts the most Tenants. We don’t play for cash prizes but things like shower gel, house cleaning products, sweets, ornaments and sometimes we include a lottery ticket which always goes down well. It means tenants that don’t get out that often have the chance of winning something that they maybe find very useful. If they don’t need the prize they have won they will then swap it with another tenant who has something more exciting.
When the tenants come down to the hall they pay £1 for a book of six games and so it does not drag on we only do a single line and the last house is a full house with a slightly better prize. We then play 3 games and stop for tea/coffee and cakes and have a break of 15 minutes to allow the tenants to have a wee blether and mix with any other tenants in the hall. This is always a good time to introduce any new tenants and make them feel welcome. The bingo all in take about 1 hour and after that some tenants sit on in the lounge and have a blether. On a Sunday we play hoy and its bingo played with playing cards instead of numbers .The cards that are shouted out and we have special hoy cards made up and once all your card are out you shout “Hoy” instead of bingo and if you shout bingo you don’t get the prize. This can be fun to watch and gets the brain going.
Hope this helps!
